Common questions about how Net Worth View stores your data, what it can import and export, and how its figures are produced. For the formulas themselves, see the calculation methodology and assumptions.
Is my financial data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything you enter is stored in this browser, using IndexedDB with a local browser-storage mirror, and — if you choose — in a file on your own computer. There is no Net Worth View account and no server-side copy of your figures. The only network requests the app makes fetch public exchange rates and send limited cookieless analytics, and — if you consent — enable analytics cookies and ads. Your balances, income and expenses are never part of those requests.
Is Net Worth View free?
Yes. The net worth tracker, income and expense tracker and FIRE calculator are all free to use, with no account, no sign-up, no trial period and no paid tier. The site is supported by advertising, which you can control at any time through Cookie settings in the footer.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no Net Worth View account to create and nothing to sign up for. Start tracking net worth, income and expenses or building a FIRE projection straight away. Your financial data is saved in your browser on your device; keep a JSON backup if you want to restore it or move it to another browser.
Do I need a bank account or connect my bank?
No. No bank account or bank connection is required. Enter your own figures for cash, investments, property, pensions and debts, and log income and expenses manually. The app never asks for bank credentials or access to your transactions. An account you add inside the tracker is simply a record of an asset or debt; it does not create an online account or connect to a bank.
Can I export and share my charts?
Yes. Use the download button in a chart’s header to save it as a JPG image. You can export net worth, cash flow and FIRE projection charts, then share the image files wherever you choose. Sharing is your choice: the app does not publish your charts or create a public link to your financial records. CSV exports let you use balances and cash flow in a spreadsheet, while a JSON backup keeps your complete records and settings. Downloads are disabled in the interactive demo, but the homepage has example JPG charts you can download.
How do I back up or move my data?
Open Data → Download backup to save a complete JSON file of everything you have entered, then use Import backup on another device or browser to restore it. Importing offers Merge, which keeps what is already there and adds what the file contains, or Replace, which discards the current data first. Nothing is synced for you, so unless you also save to a local file, a downloaded backup is the only copy that survives losing the browser.
Can I keep my data in a file on my computer?
Yes, in browsers that let websites save to a file you choose — currently Chrome and Edge on a computer. Open Data → Automatic file → Save to file… to start a JSON file with your current data, or Open file… to continue with an existing backup. While the page is open and the browser allows access, every change is saved to that file as well as to the browser; after a restart the browser may ask you to allow access again. If the file is changed somewhere else, the app loads those changes — or, when this browser has changes of its own too, asks which version to keep — rather than overwriting them. Data → Automatic file → Options can also save dated snapshots to a backup folder, so something deleted by mistake can be restored. For data that stays strictly on your computer, choose a folder that a cloud service such as iCloud Drive or OneDrive does not sync. In Safari and Firefox, use Download backup and Import backup instead.
Will my data survive clearing my browser or switching device?
Not on its own. Clearing site data, losing a device or ending a private-browsing session can remove your records. Browser storage policies may also remove site data. Installing the site as a web app may improve persistence, but it does not replace a backup. Keep a recent JSON export somewhere you can recover it, and import that file to move to another browser.
Can I import from a spreadsheet or bank export?
Yes. Data → Import CSV accepts either a cash-flow file, with month, kind, category, subcategory, amount, currency and note columns, or a balances file, with a date column plus one column per account. Imports merge into your existing data rather than replacing it, so you can bring history in one file at a time. Download CSV produces the same shapes if you would rather edit in a spreadsheet and import the result back.
Can I track accounts in different currencies?
Yes. Each account and cash-flow entry keeps its own currency. Conversion uses saved rates where available. When you add or edit a record, the app attempts a historical lookup; monthly cash-flow entries use the first day of the month. Missing historical rates can fall back to current rates, and imported records may have no saved rates. If no usable conversion is available, the numerical amount is left unchanged. Multi-currency totals are therefore estimates.
How does the FIRE projection decide when I reach financial independence?
You set a target and choose whether it is a fixed nominal amount or one in today’s money. The projection carries your latest balances forward using a growth rate per asset class, your ongoing contributions, debt repayments and a single annual inflation rate, then reports the first year in which the selected net-worth scope meets that target. Property counts toward the target when included, even though it cannot fund drawdown. Reaching the target is not a test of whether retirement spending is sustainable. A pension keeps compounding before its access year but is excluded from accessible net worth until then, and property is never treated as a liquid source for drawdown. These are deterministic scenarios: they assume constant rates and do not model market volatility, taxes or fees.
Do cash flow and projections update each other automatically?
Your latest balance snapshot sets the opening balances for the projection. Cash-flow entries do not change account balances or planned projection contributions. The projection offers an average-savings suggestion; click Apply to investments to use it. After later cash-flow edits, apply the updated suggestion again if you want it in your plan.
Recurring templates also require an explicit action: add monthly items from a month row or yearly items from a year row in Entries. They do not post automatically.
