He has worked at WMAQ-TV in Chicago, WJBK-TV in Detroit, WFLD-TV in Chicago and KMOV-TV in St. Louis before becoming a news anchor for KXAS-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth. Hansen joined NBC News as a correspondent for Dateline NBC on February 23, 1992. Hansen worked as a copy boy for the Miami Herald and WTVJ-TV as a producer and reporter before he joined NBC News as an assignment editor and producer for Weekend Today. He later became a correspondent for Dateline NBC where he has covered stories including the Columbine High School massacre, Hurricane Katrina, and the Virginia Tech massacre.
